Henry V. Snell was a 1898 graduate of the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. Upon receiving his mining engineering degree, Snell found work in Arizona, at various time as the chief mining engineer at the Old Dominion Mine, the superintendent at the Superior & Globe Mining Company, the superintendent and general manager at the Miami Consolidated Mines Co., and as an investor in the Stonewall Jackson silver mine. In 1901 Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan received funding for two additional buildings. The Civil and Mining Engineering Building, was built at a cost of $28,880, was a two-story hip-roofed structure with a five-story tower centered on the front.
